The last time this site was up, I introduced a new little guy to my gang.  He was in horrible living conditions for 3 years, wire cage, tap water, wrong food, in a painted shell………he still is in the painted shell, even though I bought him new shells.  He looked, he touched, he walked away!  For one month, he hid in a little faux cave I bought, and didn’t come out much.  He did a surface molt in the cave, two days after he came out to take a stroll around the 20 gallon tank.   He is having the best time!  Climbing on everything in site, drinking salt water for the first time probably since he was caught in the wild.  He sat and ate organic peanut butter for 2 hours!  Lots of new foods to enjoy from the hermit crab patch and toys to climb on as well.  I have had him for a little over a month.  He seems healthy, and I want to introduce him to my two other crabs, hoping he will blend in and live in the 40 gallon with them.  I am concerned about the fact he still is in the painted shell, I dont want my other two to come in contact with it.  Also, some months ago, this little crabs cage mate died.  I don’t want him to give an illness to my crabs.  He does seem healthy, eating, drinking and climbing.  I am in touch with his former owner and tell him the crab is doing very well.  Marie Ladybug has helped me with my questions.  Does anyone else think I should wait to get them together?  I have had the other 2 for almost 2 years now, very, very, attached to them.  I will not put them at risk.  Thank you!  Great to be back on CSJ!

Beth I don’t think there are many illnesses that can be passed between crabs, maybe shell rot but that is not common and it’s quite obvious when your hermit crab is infected with it. I do understand the concern over the painted shell but is it flaking off right now?

No, Stacy, it does not appear to be flaking off.  This poor little crab has had this shell for 3 years.   I keep putting the new shells in front of the cave where he sleeps, but he looks, he touches, he leaves them alone.  This poor little guy used every single resource to keep himself alive in captivity.  I begged the family to let me have him, and they finally did!  No heat, humidity, Marie told me they use their own urine for salts!  Unbelievable!  Can pics be posted yet?  Thank you for your reply.

The little guy is looking at shells right now, I am hopeful that he will choose one.  (all natural shells)  If he does, I really want to take out the painted shell he has been wearing for 3 years.  Would that stress him out if he decided he didn’t like the new one, and wanted to move back into the old one?  He has 8 to choose from, I know they do have a strong preference for certain shells, but paint is dangerous to them.  I want to do what is best for this crab, his living conditions for the past 3 years have been terrible.  Thanks!  Beth

Yesssssssssss!  The little guy changed shells last night!  I took the old painted shell out, he was in it for 3 years!   On Friday, I will have him for about 6 weeks, and it will be time to have him meet my other 2 crabs.  I don’t think he should meet them both at the same time, I will introduce him to my sweet Tiny, and see what happens.  Then, the next day, to Cray, my big  female.  She can be bossy and she is a little bit of a bully.  It took about 2 months until she “took” to Tiny.  I had to keep letting them play together under my supervision, then I would place Tiny in his tank, and Cray in hers.  When she started to ignore him, that is when I placed them together in the same tank, but only during the day.  When I felt comfortable they would be ok together overnight, I put them in Crays tank, and I kept getting up every 1/2 hour to check on them.  Didn’t get much sleep, for a few nights.  But, they were fine, and so I will take the same precautions as before.  Wish us luck!

I got Tiny and the new little guy together.  Tiny was a little bossy, I was surprised, since he is sooo sweet with me, and LOVES his tank mate, Cray.  Maybe because she is a female.  They did the “feeler fight” and Tiny raised himself up, and his purple claw, and tried to push the little guy, I put my finger on Tiny’s big claw, and he tried to push me away!  I guess it was his way of telling me to go away and mind my own business, and let them handle their meeting their way!  After a few minutes, the teeny little crab started to follow Tiny around on the love seat, it was soooo cute!  Tiny started to climb up arm of the love seat, and so Pinchy followed right along!  I let them play together for about 15 minutes, and will try again tomorrow.  I know that when Tiny ignores him, and walks away after they “feel” each other, that he is ok with Pinchy.  The next meeting will be with my big female, and, oh boy, that should be interesting!
