I have been using the same salt water for almost 2 years, and now I cannot find it.  I went to petsmart and petco, and was told the company that makes it was bought out by someone else.  I used oceanic instant sea salt mix.  Since it is no longer available, I had to buy something else.  Instant Ocean Sea Salt.  Does anyone use this brand?  The clerk at petsmart also tried to sell me the bottled salt water, I said no thanks, and told him to not sell it to other customers.  He said he didn’t, but tried to sell it to me………….unbelievable………..any way, the directions are the same, so time to make the salt water for the kiddies now.

I just read something disturbing about the salt water I purchased.  I could not find Oceanic brand, so I got Instant Ocean.  I don’t know how old the post is,  from HCA,  but I read that this particular salt mix has more metal in it than other brands.  Aren’t hermit crabs sensitive to metal?  I am going to take the water out of their tank and try to find something else, maybe Petsplus sells Oceanic salt water.

So I’ve never had a problem with Instant Ocean … it’s not my usual brand because the brand I usually used was only sold at one store that went out of business… but I’ve had my crabs for 4 years, and used Instant Ocean when i first got them, and am using it now.  Not only that but I took in some Jumbo crabs a few years ago, and the lady had them for 6 years and used Instant ocean the entire time.  So unless someone has a link to an actual scientific article, I say we just carry on.

Thank you so much for your input.  I should try to find that article again on the Hermit Crab Association.  It states of all the salt water products, Instant Ocean has the highest metal content, “something to think about”.  After I read that, I removed the water from the crab tank.  Maybe I can save the article and post it for all to read.  I am not sure how or where they got that information.  I have had my crabs for 2 years now, and adopted a tiny little guy 6 months ago.  I am very attached to them, and reading that article was upsetting to me.  I plan on having these crabs for a long time, and I want to make sure they drink safe water.  I will continue to use Instant Ocean.

I cannot use the upload for security reasons.  If anyone is interested, type in the search bar, hermit crab association instant ocean.  It will bring you to the link that shows how to mix different salt water types, and suggests IO has the highest metal content.

Beth, I just looked all over hermit crab assassociation and a lot! of people recommended it. it should be fine Beth at least until you can get your usual brand. :D it turns out a ton of people on HCA use instant ocean.

All I have ever used was Instant Ocean. It’s good that you asked though.  Depending on the article, date, and agenda of those who wrote it, it’s always good to get other opinions.
