ParticipantWell, I don’t know what its sex is. And I have only seen it up from underground only once since I got it. I have never fed my crabs a flower. And I have a little plastic hut that they like. But I’ve used bark and sticks to make a little hide and to use for climbing. I currently have a plastic plant that is suction cupped to the back wall that Max and Jaro seem to adore. And I have their shells is a pile they they also like to climb on.

MemberSounds like Max did a surface molt. Sometimes they stay above ground to molt. Please go to the website The Hermit Crab Patch for wonderful food for your crabs, they have everything you need for healthy happy hermits! They even added dried flowers, which I am going to try for my “kids”. I have been ordering from them for 2 years, and have had nothing but great things to say about their products. All of the food is healthy and safe.

ParticipantHey can someone tell me why my hermit crabs don’t seem…….. Normal?
February 5, 2013 at 11:41 pm #562Torian
ParticipantTheir molts are always good. they don’t seem stressed out when I get new ones or after a molt. they DO NOT fight…………. they play with each other…….. they usually play follow the leader. they are perfectly content. I am never worried about molts because they always pull though. I have never had any problems with them, but when I read about other peoples crabs they always are concerned about molts and attacking each other and….. well you get the picture. I got all my crabs from Petsmart and I don’t even have a UTA! I use two desk lamps and I mist the cage from time to time each day. They don’t seem like other crabs. Can anyone tell my why? 🙂

MemberDesk lamps are not the answer to heat, they are not the proper way to provide warmth in the tank. Please read the tags to the right of this page for information. What do you mean by crabs that do not act normal?
February 6, 2013 at 1:41 am #564Torian
ParticipantI know my desk lamp aren’t the answer to heat they are just the only thing I have right now. they don’t seem normal because the crabs don’t fight they never show any signs of stress. I don’t even have to worry about them molting because they always pull though. They are always fine after a molt and they never dig each other up and they are never bullying each other. They and digging each other ulike to play follow the leader or sit by the lamp having feeler fights and eating lettuce. When ever I read about other people hermit crabs they seem to be much more…… worried about molting and cannibalism and digging each other up. My crabs don’t do that and molting almost seems normal to me. The only molt I had that wasn’t that great was Romeo. One of his walking legs was messed up and his eyes seemed uneven, but he is underground again for his second molt. Well the second molt he had here. How do I know he is going to molt? He doesn’t go underground unless he is trying to molt. 🙂 thats why I don’t think them normal.

ParticipantI put Simon In ISO because she was starting to dug a hole. I found the rest of his (or her) exo and put it in the tank. Its odd. Almost all my hermit crabs come up from under ground when their exo it still soft.

ParticipantOh no! My most gentle crab (Theodora) Was attacking Simon last night! I have learned my lesson. Always put crabs with unhardened eco-skeletons in ISO Tank! It protects them from being harmed by other Crabbys!

MemberYes, you learned that hermit crabs do what they want, when they want, and how they want. What may seem “not normal” to us, is perfectly normal to them. Hermit crabs emit a certain odor when they molt, and it attracts other crabs who may dig them up, and eat them. Not exactly what you would call being nice to each other. Once in a while, they do seem to get irritated with one another, and will push each other and chirp. My big female sometimes lets me know she is annoyed, and will chirp slowly. I look in the tank, and her tankmate is nowhere near her, so I don’t know why she is “complaining”.

ParticipantYeah. I’ve never experienced chirping in any way, but they sure know how to tell me when the are happy! (and mad) lol 😀
