Ok so at work we found a pond with large native snails, looking around we located 6 empty shells. All are about the size of a 50 cent piece. They are covered with filamentous algae and stink like crazy. Any suggestions on cleaning them?
I don’t think I would use those shells for my crabs. You can get wonderful shells from The Hermit Crab Patch. I have been buying shells and other items for my crabs for about 2 years, and I love them!
I wouldn’t use those shells either. Even if you could clean the outside, the inside would still be filled with gunk. With shells so widely available from better sources, I wouldn’t put in the effort with the smelly ones.
Well they came really clean after several boilings and clorox to disinfect them. I have bought shells specifically for hermit crabs, that still had dried remnants of the previous occupant.
OMG!!!!!!!! CLOROX??? NOOOOO!!!! The fumes will kill them!!! Where in the world did you buy shells with dried remnants of other animals in them? Did you rinse the shells long enough so no fumes remain? I would never rinse anything with clorox to be used with my crabs. The only thing I read on this website, was to clean tanks with vinegar and rinse thoroughly with water until there is no odor.
@bugboy I was going to say boil them like mad and see what happens. Sounds like you got it done.
