ParticipantAbove pics, sorry, I Forgot to write what is on pics. First pic is the table used for the runway/races. The runway is bedecked with flowers, and the crab walks down while a woman in a blue dress with shells on it sings the Miss Crustacean Theme song. Which is the next pic. As you can see, there are trophies on the table.

KeymasterBeth it sounds like it went really well! So glad you went 🙂
I wish I could change the settings to allow larger images but it’s a WordPress setting. You could always upload them to flickr or some other service and link to them here.
Would you want to write an article about your first visit to the paegent? I would publish it on the site and it might draw in some additional attention.

ParticipantYes, I guess it went as well as can be expected. My wish is that the stores keep the crabs in the proper conditions, and hand out correct information on their care. I am actually working on flickr pics, so I can get them onto this site. As you can imagine, there are quite a few of them! And…….Me? Write an article? I would LOVE TO!!!! This is quite an honor…….I am very excited. Thank you sooo much! I will start on it tonight. Where do I send it, on your instant message, or right here, on this forum?
I also have a question: there has been much talk about crabs having excersize outside of their tanks. This means no heat or humidity, lets just say the house is 75 degrees. What is the amount of time, if any, the crabs could stay out and interact with their humans? I am on a Hermit Crab Rescue site, and I am being chastised because I do let them out for 10 minutes once every week or every other week. This is not sitting well with the other members. Do you interact with your crabs?

ParticipantI joined another hermit crab website. Hermit Crab Rescue. Some of these people have no clue…….I was told by a kid who looks to be all of 14 years old that my crabs live in “horrid” conditions. He doesn’t seem to like the fact that I do a deep clean every couple of months, or that my whole tank isn’t used as a molting area. For almost 4 years, I would use one half of the tank, they would dig down, and complete SUCESSFUL molts. This time, my small crab dug down to molt, and my big girl started to dig there…I made up the other side of the tank with an 8 inch mound of sand on the entire right side for her. I didn’t want her to disrupt the other crab, maybe get too close to him, dig on top of him, etc. 3 people on that website almost had a stroke…you would not believe the things they said to me. One woman actually told me the sand doesn’t need to be cleaned for YEARS! Yes, YEARS…..that, is insane….The kid went on and on about how no one cleans the beaches for the crabs, they eat the sand its filled with nutrients, and some people even said the sand I use is wrong, to use playsand (wasn’t it noted that playsand isn’t really safe to use as once thought? (silica?) Maybe a little moldy due to conditions of the store (Home Depot) or holes in the bag? I was then told mold is good for crabs….They have to be kidding…..I tried to tell them, crabs have miles and miles of beaches to roam, and when they live in a TANK, it tends to get dirty with food particles, crab waste, and musty due to the damp sand. I was told its fine for them. Someone please “pinch” me…….I must be dreaming…….Any thoughts? Check out the website…….you will be very surprised..I was also told, “I don’t know where you are getting your info from, but it is wrong”! Look up Hermit Crab Rescue
It is not my intention to speak behind anyone’s back. However, these circumstances lead me to ask my fellow crabbers on this site to check it out, and let me know what you think……Stacy, I am working on the article.November 7, 2014 at 2:59 pm #1326Beth
ParticipantBy the way, the sand I use is CaribSea Aragamax Oolite Sugar Grain Size-
I was told it is like the Calci sand, it will clump and harden up. The crabs cannot possibly molt in it……they cannot ‘tunnel” with it……I wrote the sand is perfect, it does none of those things. Perfect for molts, sand castle consistency to a tee………They wanted to know where I got my info……where should I start? Unbelievable…..December 9, 2014 at 6:45 pm #1364Beth
ParticipantStacy, I finished the article, please let me know where to send it, I don’t know if you want me to send it to you here, or on a private message. Thanks!

KeymasterI had heard of the Miss Crustacea pageant but not in such great detail. Thanks for sharing, Beth! It was great of you to hand out caresheets that I am sure were appreciated. I know I read the caresheet that came with my ‘CrazyCrabs’ (based in Perth, Australia) over and over. It’s just a shame it was the wrong info – wooden shavings as substrate was the easiest way to kill off hermit crabs! But I digress. Thanks for sharing your day with us.
