OH GOD! So I ordered tow Strawberry hermits. They are not here yet. I just found out that they don’t live as long in captivity as they do in the wild and now I feel TERRIBLE for buying them! 🙁 I read that in the wild they can live as long as about 30 years but 1-4 in captivity! So now I feel like i just put them on death row. Is that true they won’t live long in captivity? God i hope not, I feel so bad. Well last I heard they are being shipped to NY on the 24th of this month. I want to keep them in the most optimal way possible! I have been monitoring my tank closely and it seems to stay pretty constant at humidy 80-85. (it seems to rain in there!) and heat is about the same but more closer to 80. I will be getting a more high tech guages though. I was also thinking about setting up a filtration system for the salt water. I need all the advice I can get! HELP! tySeptember 18, 2013 at 7:10 pm #870
Strawberry hermit crabs are quite delicate and are difficult to keep alive. I’ve not managed to get beyond a couple years. There are some people who have been successful in keeping them a bit longer but yes I would say 4 years is the high end. They have slightly different needs in that they like warmer tanks and higher salinity levels in their salt water.September 19, 2013 at 5:31 am #879
Hmm ok. Can my Purple Pinchers live with them with the higher salinity ocean water and warmer tank temps?
I read they want heat and humidity of 80-85. is that true?
My humidity is usually 80 unless i have the lid open too long, but it goes back up to 80 again pretty fast.
I will be feeling so guilty for buying them now. Poor things 🙁September 19, 2013 at 3:18 pm #880
You will have to find a happy medium between what the Strawberries like and what the PPs like as far as humidity and temp. If you have a good sized tank you should already have different temperature zones so one end of the tank could be warmer for the perlatus and the other end a bit cooler.
As far as the saltwater goes, I mixed mine a bit stronger. Hermit crabs will self regulate the salinity of their shell water if they have both salt and fresh water pools available. So you PPs can adjust by diluting the salt water down with fresh water. Hope that makes sense.September 20, 2013 at 2:30 am #890
Yes, that is true. there is a warmer side and cooler side. Since They haven’t shipped the hermits yet I am hoping my paypal will time out. I don’t think I could enjoy them knowing it was my fault their lives will be cut short. I don’t understand why people would even consider buying them if their lives will be shorten so much in captivity. Shakes my head. I sent pics of what my tank looks like right now. I plan on getting a filtration system for the saltwater and give that an upgrade. The tank is a 29 gal. I also want to get a bigger one.

And I know you do feel upset, but if I were you maybe focus on their needs and enjoy them! Rather then fretting on when they will die? 😀 Anyways, have fun with your crabs!September 24, 2013 at 12:33 am #909
Thank you Torian. I will do my best to do that. 🙂September 24, 2013 at 12:28 pm #911
Well no word yet from livehermits.com. The Strawberries haven’t been shipped yet. If Paypal times out, I won’t re-order them. I would like to get a couple more though to make my hermits feel like they have more buddies. Maybe adopting is something I should look into?

Ooooh… you will never get your hermit crabs from that site. Tons of people bought hermit crabs and they never shipped them. This has been going on for several years now. It’s almost like they went out of business but left the website up.September 24, 2013 at 3:15 pm #918TorianParticipant

Do you mean http://www.livehermitcrabs.com? I emailed them about ordering and was told their shipment was delayed for several months (until october or november) and they would be shipping crabs with about a month delay between ordering and shipment. I’ll be placing an order with them this spring for a couple each of the different species they have in stock and about a half dozen straws for the 55gal tank I’m getting in early spring. I’ll post either way regarding delivery time.
