ParticipantI am trying to come up with some ideas to get into the stores and help them understand the real needs of hermit crabs. I do know a manager at a Petco store, he knows I love crabs, so I thought I could start with him because Petco is a large chain pet store. I was thinking something like, Hermit Crab Awareness day, set up a table, give out info, business cards, etc.

ParticipantBeth, that sounds like a great start and idea. I think it will be well worth your time and really make people understand about hermies.

ParticipantI called a Pet World once, the lady in the reptile department was a door knob

KeymasterBeth that would be a fun idea! Maybe he would let you set up a little table in the store?
There is a huge pet expo next month in my area that I am dying to be an exhibitor at but I just can’t make the scheduling work this year.October 1, 2015 at 9:05 pm #3605Vanessa Pike-Russell
KeymasterI think Hermit Crab Awareness Day sounds like a great idea!
I really hope it catches on πOctober 2, 2015 at 7:32 pm #3620Beth
ParticipantThank you! I am calling him this weekend. I never thought of a pet expo, I have to look that up, and see if there is anything around my area. I haven’t seen or heard anything in the paper or the news, but what a great way to get the word out. I am also working on getting a meeting with the admins of Wildwood and Ocean City NJ. I want to talk about the conditions crabs are kept in while being sold. Some stores were really interested in the info sheets and business cards.

KeymasterLike I said in private message, many pet stores don’t get on board unless they realise they can make money out of a complete setup. I often go into a pet store and act naive and ask them what products they sell for hermit crabs. I ask them to put them on the counter whilst I look around. I then come back with a pile of stuff (hygrometers, thermometers, lights, mangrove root, plants, etc then the foods – dried krill, plankton, baby shrimp etc) and put it all on the counter and say ‘that’s just a drop in the ocean of what I have spent my money buying for my hermit crabs. If you have some of these items near the hermit crab tank and market them as hermit crab products you will make more money’
I then give a list of products I have purchased and the $$ next to them and a total.
Watch their eyes – you can almost see the dollar signs!
Unfortunately it can be the only way to reach them.October 10, 2015 at 10:42 pm #3730Beth
ParticipantYes, I agree, the only way to make them understand is to show them the money! We just have to find a way to get them to listen, and do the right thing. If I can get one store to do it, maybe the others will do it as well. The tough part is getting them to listen, and agree to it.

ParticipantI am going to call the manager at Petco, the same one who took pics of hoards of hermies eating a coconut while he was on vacation in Costa Rica. He showed it to me years ago, waited for me to come into the store and then showed me the video with half a million crabs stuffing their little mouths, crawling all over each other to get to the coconut! He knows I am “crazy for crabs”. He is managing a different store now, but I would do the Hermit Crab Awareness Day in the store closer to me. He can get the ball rolling, call the manager and help me get “in”. I will keep everyone posted! Next on the list is a meeting with down the shore admins on selling crabs in proper conditions. I need everyone to sign a petition, will let you know about that later.
On another note, my big girl is doing a preliminary dig, she is a November molter, time to start looking for a space to settle into!
