ParticipantIts almost that time again! The Miss Crustacean Pageant of 2015 will be here again in August! And, I will be there once again, handing out my info sheets, and, CSJ business cards! Thanks to Stacy, people may start taking hermit crabs seriously when they are handed official business cards! I am adding additional info on this trip, and that info will be about Post Purchase Stress Syndrome. It is the only info I did not have, and I thought I had everything that was needed for hermit crab care! As usual, I will keep everyone updated!

KeymasterHi Beth!
So glad to hear you will be at the Miss Crustacean Pageant 2015!
Even better that you will be handing out info sheets and CSJ business cards! Thanks so much!I read your forum post about your visit in 2014 and it was like I was there with you.
Thanks for sharing your story. I remember hearing about it back in 2000 and it doesn’t sound like it has changed a lot! It’s great to hear from you. I look forward to hearing your report about this year’s pageant.
Thanks again!

KeymasterBeth we should look at those caresheets and maybe add a lhcos/csj watermark too them to punch them up a little bit.

Participanthello Stacy,
I can send you the care sheets I have, so you can let me know what to add. I have to look them over again, I don’t think I had anything about PPSS. I do think it is important. I am wondering about the watermark, do you do that when someone uses the care sheets for events?

ParticipantHello Vanessa,
Yes, I will be reporting back to CSJ, from Ocean City NJ! I am going to add PPSS, I thought I covered everything in the care sheets. I am looking forward to helping the hermits this year!

ParticipantAw man I wish I could go. NJ is so far away. But I agree people need to realize hermit crabs are awesome and deserve a happy relaxed home and a good human to provide for them. I had crabs when I was a kid, but I know so much more about them now. I still plan on upgrading my crabitat (not size but with additions to help the crabs feel comfier). I definitely think that kids (except responsible older kids) should not have a hermit crab as a first pet. A hermit crab “convention” or gathering sounds fun though as it is a good place for me to find different types of hermit crabs to adopt for as a buddy for Sebastian. Also it is a good gathering for true crabbers. I think most people overlook how amazing these guys are. And how important to the environment they are.

ParticipantYes, it is important that people know how to properly care for these wonderful little creatures! I love watching my kiddies, there is always something going on in the tank! Yesterday, one of my “hoarders” stole a piece of shrimp away from my big girl, they were sharing it, and then, Patchy pulled the shrimp right out of my big girls claw and literally ran away with it! The time before that he tried to pull a piece of shrimp out of the other crab Tiny’s claws, but Tiny held on tight, and they both had a snack together, both holding onto the shrimp tightly! Yes, I agree, hermit crabs should not be a pet for young kids, unless an adult takes the responsibility of caring for the crabs and showing the kids what to do. They are not for the beginner. They need specific care to thrive.

I will send you the care sheets I have from last year on your forever purple email, next week. The CSJ business cards will be included in the info packet. I can’t believe its only a few weeks away!

ParticipantAt some point, Stacy will post everything. I am actually going down the shore again this Friday and Saturday. This time I will leave CSJ business cards with the stores that sell crabs. I did this with the care sheets but this time its just the business cards. Ocean City and Wildwood, here I come! Of course, any crab in a cage without a shell comes home with me. A little guy I brought home that was shell less didn’t make it. I tried to coax him into a shell, he wouldn’t stay in it. I gave him fresh water, and salt water, I had him in a little dish with water so he wouldn’t dry out. I put food in front of him, and I took a q tip and rubbed water on his body. He passed the next day. I feel so bad. He has a nice little grave, with a beautiful stone that says Peace, and is decorated with colored stones. I told him, someone cared, your life mattered. I loved him, hoped he would make it. I am glad he got a decent burial, instead of being thrown into the garbage, or on the boardwalk, or whatever they do with the crabs that don’t make it. I hate that they are not cared for properly. I have to try and do something about that. Try to make the cities give them the right to the proper conditions to be sold in, and, care sheets with all pertinent information. This is going to be a project!

KeymasterIs there any way you can upload some photos you took to flickr.com/groups/crabstreetjournal ?
Perhaps create a set so people can view a slideshow?I want to live vicariously through you π
