So, my hermit crab Tiny decides to go down for a molt a few weeks ago. A few days later, he came up. Climbed on some things, ate, drank, stayed above ground for a few days………..then went down. That was 3-4 weeks ago. He came up again 4 days ago, I was soooo excited! I ran over to the tank, only to discover he hadn’t molted yet! I picked him up and held him, I said, hey, what happened? So, I placed him back into the tank, wet the molting area with salt water, and he went down again 2 days ago. I don’t know what to think, heat and humidity are perfect. The last time he molted, he would dig, but change his mind. He never dug and came up before. I guess he will do it when he is good and ready, but I cannot understand why he would bury himself for weeks, then come up (un) molted. I have had him for 1 year and 8 months. I guess he is just being, well, a hermit crab. They do what they want, when they want. Too bad if it is something we don’t understand. I just get worried because if he puts off the molt for too long, it could be dangerous to him, and I know the conditions of the tank are right, but maybe he doesn’t think so, and put off the molt………….I hope that is not the case. ok tiny…………lets molt this time! Love ya, love, mommy.December 31, 2012 at 3:59 pm #473StacyKeymaster
I have a Viola that spends almost all of it’s time buried. Not sure why some of them prefer to burrow and hide so much.January 7, 2013 at 9:49 pm #496
Patiently waiting for my big girl to come up from molting…………November 7……………..doesn’t she know I miss her? Come on already! Miss Priss…………Queen of the crabitat…………January 17, 2013 at 10:42 pm #503
Finally, she decided to start digging to come up from her molt last night after 10 pm! After 70 days, my princess is back up, looking perfect, and precious! I have missed her sooooo much! I will give her some time to acclimate again, and then its time to hold her in my hand, and tell her how much “mommy” missed her! (oh, yeah, I’ve got it BAD!) Now I will patiently wait for her tankmate Tiny to come up. Why do they have to grow this way? Oh well……………..January 27, 2013 at 5:52 pm #510
Tiny finally decided to come up last night! I heard digging and took a look, and there he was, looking at me from inside the hole, I was soooo glad he chose last night because I could stay up and watch him. He inhaled the salt and fresh water, ate some apples, and then came over to the glass. He was clawing at the glass, like he wanted to escape. I put my fingers up to the glass and we “clawed” at each other. I did fall asleep, but kept waking up to see what he was up to. Cray was in the food dish, facing him, so I stayed up a little to make sure she didn’t bully him. I woke this morning to find Tiny, actually to not find Tiny, but I do hear him digging. He never does that, once he is out, he stays out. Who knows with crabs? They do pretty much what they want, when they want! I am hoping breakfast (hard boiled eggs) will bring him out. Next week its time for a deep clean.February 6, 2013 at 11:55 pm #569
Wow sounds like your crabs molt a lot! I have seven hermit crabs but my mom (I am on my moms account) won’t let me stay up and watch them! The hermit crab tank is in the living room so I can’t really stay up. One day I am going to ask her if I can sleep in the living room next to the hermit crab tank! lol 😀February 8, 2013 at 2:54 am #572
You can hear their shells clinking in the tank, climbing on everything, making noise. I love having them in the bedroom, that way I can look at them whenever I want. I love them!February 8, 2013 at 3:01 am #573
Yeah. Hermit crabs are amazing! I am looking to get a big tank of my own for my birthday.February 8, 2013 at 11:03 pm #575
I have a 40 gallon for my 2 crabs, and a new little guy in a 20 gallon. I am slowly letting all of them get to know each other before I put the littlest one in the big tank. I want everyone to get along, and my big crab can be a bully sometimes. It took 3 months for her to get used to the crab that shares the tank with her now. They have been together for almost 2 years. Wait for a sale, tanks can be very expensive, the 40 gallon was 119.00, but then it went on sale for 59.99! Half price! Your crabs need alot of room to climb and play. I go to Petsmart and Petco for supplies, and also order from The Hermit Crab Patch. They have food your crabs will LOVE!February 9, 2013 at 1:59 am #576
Right now I am Looking on castanet for cheap cages in my area. I am also looking in petsmart for cheap cages. 😀February 9, 2013 at 6:11 am #577
GGGRRRRR!!! Why do my hermit crabs take so long to molt! Gosh, sometimes I wonder if they are dead, but I know they aren’t because the tank doesn’t smell. The only time it smells is when I leave the shrimp shells in the tank too long. Lol. Right now there are 3 hermit crabs above ground and 6 hermit crabs underground in the main tank. There is 1 hermit crab in ISO and he (or she) is underground. I am hopeing to get a tank (any size) for my birthday (Feb. 27) so I can own more hermit crabs. Does anyone know a company that sells strawberry hermit crabs in Kelowna BC, Canada?Or someone who is selling a tank (big) for cheap in my area?
