Tagged: molting
I became the proud owner of three hermit crabs as of yesterday. Peewee Hermit, Crab Cakes, and Kani. I took out all three this morning. and put them on their playground so i could put in coconut fiber in with the sand. they were all three there. I went to the pet shop to get some more salt water solution, and Peewee was gone! is he molting? i dont want to go and dig him up because he might be. but do they even molt the day after you get them?
oh and i did put them back in their tank 🙂
It is unlikely it’s molting but not unheard of in newly purchased crabs, it depends on how long they’ve been in captivity and unable to molt. It’s likely the crab dug down to destress which actually can be bad. He really needs to be above ground eating and drinking well to recover from the neglect suffered after being collected from the beach.

You may also want to search for PPS posts and read the articles about minimizing PPS deaths in new crabs.
okay, peewee and crab cakes were missing, i dug up peewee and crabcakes. but how do i tell if they are molting?
Crabcakes is ACTIVE. but peewee isnt very active. he never really was though. it would be really helpful if someone could list the signs of a crab molting.
There is an article here about moulting. Actually, it’s several articles that members have written that can help explain some of the signs, symptoms, and processes that go on during their molt. I think it would be helpful.
I always felt that it was difficult to know for sure if a hermit crab was molting or if it were suffering from PPS. These articles and contributions from other helpful members sure saved my girls and my nerves.

Sings for molting: Crazy eating, Cloudy looking eyes, dull leg tips, molting sack & digging.
Hope that helped?
