Tagged: seaweed
Hello, I live on the coast of Maine and near the Atlantic coast. I recently gathered, then dried in my oven, seaweed for my hermits.
When I put some in for them It seems to plump back up from the humidity in the tat and also I put it near their salt water. They seem to be very happy with it, but I am feeling unsure.
Even though I baked it first, is I feel unsure about the safety.
How long should I leave it in the tank, (I think it smells bad ) I worry about things going rancid and making my babies sick.
Advice appreciated.
Thank you
As long as it’s not moldy, don’t worry about it. Hermit crabs are beach scavengers and eat all sorts of gross things. You have to assume they have enough natural instinct to know if something is dangerous for them. You don’t want mold spreading in your tank tho.
If you gathered the seaweed yourself directly from the water I think it should be safe. I’ve offered dried organic seaweed and my crabs won’t touch it, even when soaked in ocean water.
Okay thank you! I haven’t seen any mold on anything yet I clean things pretty often. But I will keep an eye out for mold.
