Patchy was in the cave during the day because, he comes out at night!  Last night he was climbing around, had some water………….I smoothed out the sand last night before going to bed, I figured I would be able to tell if he came out, but I caught him walking on the mopani wood!  That little bugger!  He is tired during the day from his night out!  He usually is active during the day too, but hey, I am not going to be picky, at least he comes out to play!

Patchy does not want to come out and play.  He wants to stay in his cave, but I took him out a few times and he walks on my arm.  When I return him to his tank, he goes into the cave and stays there.  It is very unlike him to hide, he is a very outgoing crab.  I made chicken yesterday and he did eat it, and today he is munching on peanut butter.  I took the cave away and put it on the other side of the tank.  I put the food bowl in front of him and he is eating, but he won’t play and climb.  I will put the cave back when he finishes his “lunch”.  I don’t understand why he is hiding so much, his molt was perfect, his color is vibrant, but he won’t come out of the cave.  I have to say I am a little worried, at least he is eating.

The wait is over, he’s out!!!!!!!  He looks soooo cute!  He didn’t want the shrimp, he got a drink of water, and went back into the cave.  I guess he walked for a bit, I have to check the food dish to see if he went in there. I just put peanut butter in front of the cave, he loves it!  After a few days, I will let him play with the other crabs.  My goal is to put him into the main tank.  He resides in a 20 gallon long, and my other 2 are living in a 40 gallon.  I have to be careful, the big crab can be a bully, so it has to be supervised when they are together.

I guess they have minds of their own……………

I tried to entice the little guy out from his molt, I thought maybe he would come out for a shrimp.  I put it in front of the cave, but I guess he isn’t ready to come out,  maybe waiting for his exo to harden up.  I guess I will just have to wait……………….

Yes, a surface molt.  Four to be exact.  He had a mountain of sand, dug a tunnel, then changed his little crab mind, and went into the cave again.  He lived in a large wire cage for 3 years with his prior owner, so I guess he got used to surface molts.  I really thought when he dug a tunnel, he was going to molt under the sand, but he had his own idea, and for the fourth time since I have had him,  he chose the cave.  I noticed he moved today, so I am hoping he is almost done, and will come out to play.  He has shrimp on the menu for his post molt feeding. (and his usual food from the Hermit Crab Patch)  Spoiled rotten crabs……..oh, and a spoiled rotten dog too!

Seasonal molts?  Hmmm……….crabs pretty much molt when they need to, I guess you can have “group” molts, but they molt to grow, not just because their tankmates are molting.

Never EVER dig up a molting crab!!!!!!!  Are they both molting, or just one at this time?  Keep checking on them, make sure they are not trying to attack each other.  But once they dig down, don’t dig them up, they will die from the stress.

I cannot use the upload for security reasons.  If anyone is interested, type in the search bar, hermit crab association instant ocean.  It will bring you to the link that shows how to mix different salt water types, and suggests IO has the highest metal content.

Thank you so much for your input.  I should try to find that article again on the Hermit Crab Association.  It states of all the salt water products, Instant Ocean has the highest metal content, “something to think about”.  After I read that, I removed the water from the crab tank.  Maybe I can save the article and post it for all to read.  I am not sure how or where they got that information.  I have had my crabs for 2 years now, and adopted a tiny little guy 6 months ago.  I am very attached to them, and reading that article was upsetting to me.  I plan on having these crabs for a long time, and I want to make sure they drink safe water.  I will continue to use Instant Ocean.

Yes, I am not thrilled with them, I don’t know if the info concerning salt water is true, they claim that Instant Ocean has more metal concentrations than any other salt water mix.  I have no way of knowing if the statement is true or not……………….I could not find my Oceanic sea salt so I chose Instant Ocean, and now I am afraid to give it to my crabs.  I called Petco, and they are getting a shipment of Oceanic brand in on Wednesday.  As far as banning you, some websites state the person has to be of a certain age to be able to be on the site.  I believe this site has specific rules and forms as well, but I do not know the age you have to be to join.  You are obviously old enough to be on here, or did your mom have to sign you in?  Don’t be uspet, have your mom sign for you on HCA, that way you can still be in contact with the people you are adopting the crabs from, and you can tell them how the crabs are doing from time to time.  Congrats on your new additions!

I just read something disturbing about the salt water I purchased.  I could not find Oceanic brand, so I got Instant Ocean.  I don’t know how old the post is,  from HCA,  but I read that this particular salt mix has more metal in it than other brands.  Aren’t hermit crabs sensitive to metal?  I am going to take the water out of their tank and try to find something else, maybe Petsplus sells Oceanic salt water.

Thank you!  All is well in crabland……….she takes two days to “welcome” Tiny back from his molt.  I just happened to be home, every time he came up, I don’t know for sure if she would really hurt him, maybe she is just trying to assert herself to be the “boss, applesauce”.  She wants him to know, she is still QUEEN CRAB………..and don’t you forget it!  She is sooo silly……..she bosses him around from time to time, and he just does want she wants, hey, just like humans!  Sooooo funny!

My medium sized crab was under for 4 weeks and came up almost 2 weeks ago.  I noticed he didn’t look like he was quite finished with his molt.  He ate, and drank, and went to the other end of the tank and has been under the sand since then.  I don’t know why he did that, he never came up and went back down before.  I can see his shell from the side of the tank, I have a towel there to keep it dark for him.  Maybe he wasn’t happy where he dug and decided to move.  Who knows?  Only he does, and he’s not talking!
