Clean all the decor, put in new substrate, make a sealed lid that holds the humidity in and doesn’t let gnats in, and bathe the crabs in saltwater to kill all the gnats. When bathing the crabs, bathe them in salt water and submerge the crabs for 10m each. This insures that the gnats will die.

Pam,
I plan to do different tests to find which mixture of Eco Earth and Sand is the best for a molting crab. I will make multiple jars of concentrations, flood them with water, and place a piece of a dead crab in each one to simulate molting. I will keep the remains in the jars for 3 weeks and then record results afterwards.
Crab remains will…[Read more]

Hello all,
I’m not sure if all of you know the reason why we don’t use 100% Eco Earth as a substrate for hermit crabs. This is because of Eco Earth’s acidity levels. You see, the reason crabs exposed to 100% Eco Earth surface molt more often, is because the acids in the Eco Earth eat away at the crab’s bare skin causing molting…[Read more]

Maxwell Isenberg replied to the topic How does my tank look? What do you think? in the forum Chewin' the Choya 2 years, 12 months ago
This is a good start, but I’m afraid you need to do a little more to it. Hermit crabs are tropical creatures and require salt and fresh water. From what I can see, your tank lacks a saltwater dish. When making water dishes, they should be deep enough for your largest crab to fully submerge in. Drowning isn’t much of a problem with hermit crabs,…[Read more]

Hey guys,
I just recently went through all my substrate, for I have had crabs molting in it for a few months now. I am planning on cleaning the tank, so I was moving non-molting crabs to an iso tank and waiting for the molters to emerge. It has been a few months since I have transferred the last crab to the iso tank, and I should have about 5…[Read more]

Maxwell Isenberg replied to the topic Would Crabitat be suitable in a classroom? in the forum Chewin' the Choya 3 years, 1 month ago
If you have a 20g tank and all the minimum requirements for crabs, your tank can get quite expensive. As you can see from the file attached, hermit crabs have require a little bank to setup and their needs should not be neglected for the sake of saving money. You could skimp out on some of the stuff I listed and build the most barebones tank for…[Read more]

I have seen people have crabs as class pets. For a beginner crabitat it would be around $200. The crabs wouldn’t be the most interesting, for their molting makes them dig under the substrate. You would experience a crab digging down for a few months. Unless you have quite a few crabs, you won’t get too much activity. Since you will have loud and…[Read more]
