Land Hermit Crab Shell Guide

A hermit crab’s shell is his home and his protection from predators and desiccation. Hermit crabs take up residence in discarded shells and can not make their own shell. When kept as pets it is important that you choose suitable shells for your hermit crab. Provide 3-5 suitable shells per hermit crab. Shells can be placed directly on the substrate or in a designated bin that we call a Shell Shop. This helps keep the shells clean and reduces the chances of them being buried. In semi-terrestrial hermit crabs a well-fitting shell is essential for maintaining low evaporation rates and carrying ample water. An appropriatelyRead More →

How big is that hermie in the window?

What’s a micro hermit crab? What’s a jumbo hermit crab? Size can be subjective and hard to define but we are trying anyway!  Our friends in Indonesia have developed two more realistic size charts based on leg length or leg span. Indonesia is home to many of different species including the large C. brevimanus. With much more data to work with the group created these new sizing charts which are more accurate. Why does size matter? When determining how much space is needed per hermit crab we need to know how large the crabs are. Small crabs can be happy in a smaller habitat whileRead More →

Measuring Hermit Crab Shells

**A newer version of this article is available: http://crabstreetjournal.org/blog/2018/02/11/land-hermit-crab-shell-guide/ Hermit crab shells sold online are typically sold based on the size of the opening. When purchasing new shells for your hermit crab, measure their existing shell and then choose several shells that are somewhat larger. Hermit crabs typically prefer a shell that fits snugly allowing them to fully seal off the opening to protect themselves from predators and dessication. The photo shows how to take measurements properly. Ecuadorian (C. compressus) typically prefer a shell with a D shaped opening and commonly wear shells that are too small. Other species will wear a variety of shells,Read More →

Froggy Kisses writes: Dear Milo , My crab Crab Cakes has sadly passed away recently and my other crab Sebastion seems depressed . My sister also has a crab but he is about 10 times larger than Sebastion . Will her crab Bam Bam hurt Sebastion ? And besides him interacting with Bam Bam is there anything I can do to help ? Dear Froggy Kisses, I am so sorry to hear about your Crab Cakes dying. 🙁 While some people may disagree there is no reason a large crab would harm a small crab. Think about how hermit crab gather in huge groups inRead More →

Tagged: chart, hermit crab, hermit crab care, size

This is a chart created by the hermit crab community to have a general guideline for size categories in reference to our hermit crabs. Print the circle chart on a letter size piece of paper. Place your crab in the center of the bullseye and use the outer ring touched by the legs to determine size. Red center- micro Pink – x-small Orange – small Green – medium Blue – large Pink – x-large Purple – jumbo Use a piece of string our something similar to measure the second walking leg in centimeters. Compare to the chart to determine the size. Your combined results shouldRead More →
