Hermit crab101 writes: I just got a hermit crab from the Jersey Board walk by surprise and I have no supplies and am saving up for more supplies but just for now is grass a good bedding for your crabbatat? Hi Hermit Crab101! Grass is not dangerous to a hermit crab but it is not a safe substrate. Sand mixed with coco fiber is the perfect substrate.  You can read more about substrates here: Substrates for Hermit Crabs To get the complete list of supplies you will need check out this article: Hermit Crab Essentials Shopping List Your friend in a pinch, MiloRead More →

UPDATE: Please note that all heat pad, strips should be placed on the back wall of the tank and not under it as used to be the norm. written by Marie Davis It can be confusing as to what the temperature of ones Crabitat actually is sometimes. One buys a thermometer to place on the inside of their Crabitat to monitor the air temperature. The hermit crabs original home is in the tropics, so air temperature of ones Crabitat is important so not to cause them any undo stress. The thermometer is placed at substrate level, along with the humidity gauge, to monitor the temperatureRead More →

Written by Marie Davis Article reprinted here with exclusive permission to Marie (ladybug15057) for use on the Crab Street Journal and, by author’s stipulations, may not be reprinted elsewhere. You are always welcome to link to this article. There is a newer product on the market called Crayola play sand. It comes in 4 vibrant colors pink, purple, green and blue which means some form of coloring additive is used. From past research I have done, I had learned that just because it is FDA, OHSA, EPA, etc. approved or within their standards, or considered safe for children does this necessarily mean it is safeRead More →

Substrates for Hermit Crabs

In: Caresheets
Tagged: aragonite, coral, eco earth, hermit crab, sand, substrate

The commonly used and recommended substrate is 5 parts play sand to 1 part coco fiber. The other sands or stones listed here are safe for using in your crabitat in select areas but not as the primary substrate. Hermit crabs require deep, moist sand to burrow and molt properly. Sand Collecting sand from the beach is not advised. In most areas it is illegal to take sand from the beach. In many areas of the world the beach sand is heavily contaminated from polluted waters. Most owners use play sand found at their local hardware store. Please take note of the quality when purchasingRead More →
